Number of years paddling: 3 Why did you start paddling? I started paddling because I wanted to set an example for my 2 kids that one needs to continue physically challenge oneself even though age is catching up. Secondly, deep in my unconscious being, I think I have always wanted to paddle and race in a dragon boat. I remember watching many dragon boat races when I was growing up in Penang. Those boats were huge back then and they really beat those drums back then too. Mum and Dad usually take us to an annual international regatta which was held along Gurney Drive in those days. It was always a huge event with big crowds, great energy and the location was all decked out with colourful flags\banners. Oh… and lots of food… Penang is all about the food. I thought the entire festival was really exciting and I remember saying to myself that "I want to race in a dragon boat someday". I didn't think much of dragon boat after I left home until I came to work in Toronto with CIBC. I found out that CIBC has a dragon boat team. So, I decided to join the team back in 2007 and the rest, as they say, is history. Best part about being on Jetstart: This is the toughest to write because there is so much to say about all the best part(s) being in this team. Everything about the team is the best. It starts with an insanely passionate, dedicated, knowledgeable and no nonsense captain\coach... and at the same time, very understanding and helpful. I don’t know anyone like him. Friendly team members who are genuine and equally committed to the team. The great food at each and every team events. Above all, the sense of being apart of a big family… the feeling of true belonging and acceptance of and by each team member… just knowing that someone will lend a hand when you need it... well most of the time. And on that note, the loads of fun this team is capable of generating is just out of this world!! Most memorable moment: 2009 Montreal - Saturday night – alcohol - stayed up too late... need I say more? Favourite hobbies: Apart from dragon boating, I am also obsessed with running long distance. I go to spinning classes for cross-training. Weight training at the gym to maintain muscle strength (as Alain said – musclanation). In contrast to that, I like cooking and experimenting with different recipes in my little kitchen. And when it is time to chill, a good book at hand is always the perfect escape into a different world – the world of sci-fi, fantasy and history. |
